What are Skills in an AI CRM Manager?

Definition

In Replenit, Skills are category-specific commercial capabilities Maestro applies to a decision, the way a seasoned category merchant would. A Skincare Regimen Planner Skill lets Maestro reason like a skincare expert; a Cosmetic Routine Builder Skill lets it build routines like a beauty advisor.

A general model can reason about a customer, but great retail decisions require domain judgment: the specific expertise a skincare specialist, a furniture planner, or a pet nutritionist brings to a problem. Skills are how Maestro acquires that expertise. Each Skill encodes how an expert in a given category thinks, so a decision is shaped by real domain knowledge, not generic logic.

When Maestro makes a decision, it applies the relevant Skill to the customer's context. A Skincare Regimen Planner Skill reasons about routines, ingredient compatibility, and replenishment timing; a Furniture Planner Skill reasons about rooms, sets, and dimensions. The Skill is what makes the resulting action read like advice from someone who genuinely knows the category.

The distinction

Domain judgment, not if-then logic

A rule encodes logic and a recommender surfaces correlations. A Skill embeds how an expert thinks.

A rules engine captures if-then logic a person wrote in advance, and a recommendation engine surfaces items that tend to co-occur. Neither carries the reasoning of a category expert; they operate on triggers and correlations, not on how a specialist would actually approach the customer's situation.

A Skill embeds that expertise. It gives Maestro the judgment of a beauty advisor, a pet nutritionist, or an electronics specialist, so the decision reflects how a seasoned merchant in that category would think about the customer's problem, and what they would genuinely advise.
